In a pink minimalist room, there are a few rugs that look very cozy. There is also an orange chair on the carpet.

Some Types of Carpet Textures You Should Know

Carpets can transform the look of your space. Aside from making the room cosy, carpets are perfect for adding color and definition. They also provide a safe area for kids to play. Plus! The softness and warmth of the carpet as you slide your toes through it feel so good.

Contrary to what many people believe, carpets have become more practical since stain-resistant carpets have been introduced.  Are you thinking about buying a new carpet?

If 'Yes', then you’re probably feeling lost considering the sheer number of colors, designs, and materials available. Don't worry; we're here to help.

Let’s start by choosing the right carpet texture.

Carpet Construction

Before learning about different kinds of carpet textures, you need to know how a carpet is constructed. Carpets are made by looping yarn (made of wool, nylon, or polyester) repeatedly into a backing material. This makes the ‘pile’ or the surface layer of a carpet.

The carpet texture is the overall look and feel of the carpet. Different weaving (looping) techniques, length of yarn loops, and a few other factors determine the pile and, ultimately, the texture of the carpet.

Now, let’s move to the different categories of carpets.

Main Carpet Categories

There are two main types of carpets based on texture:

1. Cut Pile Carpet

There was a brown cut-pile rug on the clean wooden floor of the room.

Cut pile carpets are mostly made of wool and polyester. The yarns in cut pile carpets are cut at the ends, as the name indicates. The fibers are exposed due to cutting, and the pile stays upright. As a result of this, cut pile carpets are incredibly soft, inviting, and excellent at resisting both matting and crushing.

Cut pile carpets come in different colors, lengths, and thicknesses. And when the angle of the shearing that cuts the yarn changes, you get different styles of cut pile carpets.

Frieze and Saxony are different kinds of cut pile carpets. These carpets blend well from one room to another. So, if you want to carpet the entire house, go for cut pile carpets.

Downside

Despite the fantastic advantages, cut pile carpets have a downside. Cut pile carpets are not that durable and trackless. Plus! The maintenance and cleaning of cut pile carpets are complex. Due to the open ends and loose fibers, liquids and dirt quickly spread into these carpets.

2. Loop Pile Carpet

Loop pile carpets are usually made from nylon, olefin, and wool. These carpets are also called uncut pile carpets. Instead of shearing like in cut pile carpets, the loops in loop pile carpets are left intact. These carpets are highly durable, resistant to stains, and easier to clean than cut pile carpets.

What’s more? Loop pile carpets are trackless and can be used in the high-traffic family and commercial areas. These carpets are constructed in several different weights, lengths, and thicknesses.

Loop pile carpets have many variations. For example, the level loop pile carpets have all fibers loops of equal length. In contrast, the patterned loop pile carpets have loops of varying heights.

Downside

Sharp, pointed objects and claws can pull the fibers of loop pile carpets, making them loose. This makes the carpet look untidy. Still, it doesn’t impact the durability of the carpet.

There is also a third category of carpets called cut-loop pile carpets. In these carpets, some fibers are cut, while others are looped. This produces unique style carpets that can add life to any space. Cut-loop pile carpets show amazing performance. But have slightly less durability compared to loop pile carpets.
